Hong Kong Special Report - The changing face of hedge fund technology

Among the seemingly endless supply of depressing results, and the atmosphere of general gloom, a few glimmers of light still shine. Where the global banking system has managed so far to wipe at least US$100bn from shareholder value, the global hedge fund industry has emerged from the rubble in robust shape. According to reliable estimates, the hedge funds have bucked the trend to the extent that they have actually upped shareholder value by US$200bn.

Next Generation Order Management?
Fidessa LatentZero: new solutions for hedge fund execution

The need to deploy specialist technology solutions is one of the operational imperatives which hedge funds have been waking up to recently. On the transactional side of the business, this has led to a quest for more efficient market access, without having to disclose the size of a deal, or where it is being apportioned. CIOs at larger funds have been looking for a way to simplify the transaction processes their dealing desks are employing, even while maintaining multi-broker relationships.

Eye On the Prize

With $15 billion assets under management, San Diego based Nicholas Applegate Capital Management (NACM) is somewhat dwarfed by Allianz Global Investors, the asset management giant that acquired it in 2001. But in its 24 years of operations, NACM has built up significant expertise and now trades a range of products from traditional stocks to quant driven strategies.

Technology has rapidly become a significant enabler of the firm's business, especially as it embarks on making the transition from a vendor-built order management system (OMS) and then plans to add an execution management system (EMS), making it a trendsetter in adopting the latest entry in the expanded order and execution management (OEMS) space.

Roundtable/Webcast - The single, integrated front-office suite: still a pipedream?

With the advent of integrated OMS-EMS platforms designed specifically for traditional investment managers and hedge funds, it has become increasingly clear that the buy side is moving towards the scenario where a single front-office system might be able to supports firms’ entire trading operations. Buy-Side Technology investigates this phenomenon, but questions whether this convergence of technologies will ever get to the point where the entire front office – including all business processes traditionally associated with the front office and the full gamut of asset classes buy-side firms are currently trading – is managed by a single application. If this is to be the case, what will the typical prerequisites be for such a system in terms of connectivity, advanced execution, compliance, order generation and management, and modelling?

Dan Watkins, CEO North America, participates.
